The Smial

Hobbit-holes, otherwise called Smials, were the preferred dwellings of Hobbits in the Shire, the ancient mortal race inhabiting Middle-earth.  Bilbo and Frodo Baggins lived in a smial called, Bag End.

Our Smial, is available year round to guests of Olde Farm.   Our indoor Barbecue Hut provides a spectacular setting in the garden overlooking the pond for an unforgettable dining experience, whatever the Norfolk weather has in store for you!

Decorated inside with rugs, cushions and thick blankets, our Smial experience is designed with your total comfort and warmth in mind. Is it a Hobbit House, a Santa’s Grotto or even a fairytale cottage, whatever it reminds you of our BBQ hut exudes mystique and magic, the ideal place for a spot of story telling over a glass of hot mulled wine or cider. Sit and feel the warmth of the fire and watch the flames flicker as you grill and dine at your leisure, soaking up the unique atmosphere under the huge Norfolk skies.

This is your opportunity to have your own exclusive, secluded party – we provide everything you’ll need from cutlery to candles, charcoal and logs to plates and glasses to tongs and tomato sauce. The only thing you need to decide is what is on the menu. If you wish we can even provide you with everything you need for your BBQ – from steaks to shrimps, sausages, burgers, veggie kebabs, corn-on-the-cob and Dalene’s decadent but delicious bananas with whiskey. Just give us your shopping order and leave the rest to us. Or you can bring your favourite food with you or shop at the local butchers – the choice is entirely up to you but don’t forget the marshmallows!

Use of The Smial is included with all stays at Olde Farm. In the winter Wellies or other strong outdoor footwear are essential.
